Dunavan did some research of his own this week, finding in a book that the fungus is of the genus Ganoderma.
“It primarily grows on hemlock, spruce and pine from May to November,” Dunavan said, citing the book. And it’s found from Canada to North Carolina.

Malaysian listed firm DXN Holdings Bhd is planning to set up a mushroom farm in Ethiopia. The initial investment outlay is 285 million Ethiopian birr (RM89.5 million) for the first of its kind mushroom production facility in the African nation. The farm will grow various types of mushrooms and produce packed food and other products for the domestic and export markets. The company plans to develop and cultivate a 60ha mushroom farm around Lake Shala, where it will also set up the mushroom production facility.

Mushroom 'offers miracle cure'

THOUSANDS of people in Bahrain are turning to a "miracle" mushroom said to help combat potentially deadly diseases, including cancer. But it should be taken only as an aid and not instead of normal medical treatment, its importers said yesterday.

Indian microbiologist Dr K K Janardhanan said research he has conducted over several years at the Amala Cancer Research Institute in Thrissur, Kerala, had proved beyond doubt that the mushroom powder, consumed regularly as a food supplement, had actually helped patients who were suffering from potentially fatal diseases.

"Tests on animals, on whom tumours had been induced, and reports we have received from patients whose side effects of drugs were greatly reduced, have led us to publish studies in several international medical journals of repute," Dr Janardhanan said at a Press conference in Manama.

Olympic athletes queue to try old Chinese remedies
