Ganoderma is a genus of hundreds described species. Ganoderma is a genus of polypores which grow on wood. They can be differentiated from other polypores because they have a double walled basidiospore.
Ganoderma is considered one of the most important herbs in Asian healing. Ganoderma is used in Japan and China to treat cancer and to stimulate the immune system after radiation or chemotherapy. It is also used to treat myasthenia gravis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), both autoimmune diseases.
The American Herbal Pharmacopoeia and Therapeutic Compendium has published a monograph on the species. Ganoderma contains polysaccharides that are found in many mushrooms that are thought to have beneficial properties.
